This is my book review for "The Ten Trusts: What We Must Do for the Animals We Love" by Jane Goodall & Marc Bekoff.
From the back:
World-renowned behavioural scientists Jane Goodall and Marc Bekoff argue passionately and persuasively that if we put these ten trusts to work in our lives, the earth and all its inhabitants will be able to live together harmoniously. Simple yet profound, The Ten Trusts will not only change our perspective regarding how we live on this planet, it will establish our responsibilities as stewards of the natural world, ultimately showing us how to live with respect for all life.
My Rating: 8/10
My Comments: Really good book. Really enjoyable, and touching.
Random Quotes from Book:
Millions of people do not realize how closely connected we humans are with the rest of the animal kingdom. They do not realize that we ourselves are animals. Instead, they perceive a false reality in which humans stand on one side of an unbridgeable chasm and the rest of the animal kingdom stands on the other. (Jane Goodall)
Why is this so - why are dogs such good healers? For one, if we allow dogs into our lives, they readily awaken our senses, spirits, and souls. They, and many other animal beings, offer us pure and unfiltered respect, humility, compassion, trust, and love. We have much to learn from them. (Marc Bekoff)
By acting as stewards, by considering how we live and what demands we make on the natural resources of the planet, we can help to make this a better world for all living beings. And we ourselves shall feel better, less guilty. There is a lot that we can do, each in our own way. We must not lose hope, we must not give up. Above all, we must share what we have learned, encorage our friends to help in this most vital task - the stewardship of the Earth.
But time is running out and we must speed up our efforts; otherwise it will be too late. (Jane Goodall)
Each day of life is a test. Do we actually "walk our talk"? Do we practice what we preach? Do we think about the footsteps we leave as we move through life? And, above all, do we have the courage to stand up for what we believe in when others laugh at us? Or when they threaten us? If we care, truly care, about the natural world and about the well-being of animals, then we must be prepared to face the challenges, both small and large, that come our way. We must stand up for our beliefs and, above all, put them into practice. We must not despair, but live with hope for the future. (Jane Goodall)
The abuse and killing of animals continues, but we must make our objections know. Given what some people choose to do to animals, I often wish they were not the marvelous and magical beings they are. But the fact is that many animals do indeed suffer brutal exploitation and intense pain, and we must change our ways - now. (Marc Bekoff)
