I was ready to have a little fun at Ron Teague's expense until his story grew darker and darker as the day wore on.
He's the East Dallas man who led Dallas constables on a high-speed chase through two counties Monday afternoon.
Said he was trying to get his dying cat to a veterinarian. I bet unwitting pet lovers far and wide collectively sighed, "What a guy."
One local radio jock even called him a hero. You've got to love your cat, I guess, to drive 90 mph and ignore the sirens and lights nipping at your heels.
My wife, the animal lover and rescuer that she is, went so far as to say she would have done the same thing.
"If one of my dogs was dying," Shannon said, and I'm paraphrasing because I hadn't had any caffeine when she blurted this out, "I wouldn't stop either until I got them to the vet."
I don't think she's serious, but I told her I'd be sure to write daily letters to her in jail.
That's where Mr. Teague ended up. He was charged with evading arrest and detention and is being held on $50,000 bail.
This is where the story begins to take on a different hue.
Instead of being a heart-warming report of a man's valiant effort to save his sick pet, it quickly developed into a sad and cautionary tale of a man hoarding animals for reasons that aren't yet clear.

He shouldn't be allowed to care for companion animals. Hoarding can actually be a pretty strong addiction. And if banning him from caring for companion animals is too much, at least set a limit to 2-3 companion animals and have his home visited frequently!
