ANTI-VIVISECTION campaigners held candlelit vigils to mark International Animal Rights Day.
The West Wickham-based Passive Pressure group gathered for peaceful demonstrations outside the Cancer Research UK shop in West Wickham on December 9 and at the GlaxoSmithkline lab in Beckenham on December 10.
Coordinator Jan Yarker said both groups' research caused animals "emotional and physical pain".
She said: "Being for animal rights means public debate and passionate, intelligent opposition to cruel practices such as those funded by Cancer Research UK and those conducted by GlaxoSmithkline. It's not a question of putting animals before humans; it's simply about respecting life.
"Despite many promises of cures for cancer 'just around the corner,' research on animals has for over 30 years failed to provide any such breakthrough, although we can cure virtually all cancers in rats and mice! Non-animal research is being done, and this is the ethical and scientifically valid way forward."
To mark the 9th International Animal Rights Day, the group lit candles and displayed large banners and placards - accompanied by a giant dog and cat, to remember the animals who have suffered and died in experiments.www.bromleytimes.co.uk/content/bromley/times/news/story.aspx?brand=BMLYTOnline&category=news&tBrand=northlondon24&tCategory=newsbmlyt&itemid=WeED20%20Dec%202006%2012%3A02%3A30%3A117
