Four female protestors invaded the catwalk during a fashion show on the first day of Hong Kong Fashion Week, to protest designers using animal fur, according to the animal rights group responsible for the act on Tuesday.
The protestors unfurled a banner reading "Cecilia and Peter: Fur Scum" and "Fur hurts" and chanted slogans during the show Monday night before they were dragged from the stage and thrown out by security guards.
According to a statement released Tuesday by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) Asia-Pacific, the protest was aimed at designers Cecilia Yau and Peter Lau, who the group says use animal fur in their clothes.
Organizers of the fashion event were unavailable for comment Tuesday.
The protest followed the group's release of video footage from a fur farm in China - now the world's leading fur exporter - which shows animals being slammed on the ground and then panting and blinking as they are skinned alive.
PETA says that on other farms, animals suffer poisoning, electrocution or have their necks broken, while in the wild, animals are bludgeoned or drowned after being caught in steel-jaw traps.
In addition, it says, millions of cats and dogs are killed in China and their fur is often deliberately mislabelled as the skin of other species.
"Fur belongs only on the backs of its original owners", said protester Yvonne Taylor, one of those ejected from the show, in the statement. "Cruelty is never in style. In the 21st century - with so many fashionable alternatives available - there's no excuse to buy, sell or wear fur."
The protest occurred during one of the initial shows of The World Boutique expo, which runs concurrently with Hong Kong Fashion Week until Thursday.
