Excellent article. I also like the answer that I heard in the documentary "Your Mommy Kills Animals". I'm afraid I cannot remember the name of the man who was saying this, but he said that there were two answers to this question... one rude, and one not so rude. The rude answer was basically: "What are YOU doing for people?" The not so rude one was to point out how people who are animal rights activists are typically involved in many other types of activism, and how children raised to be compassionate to animals grow up to be compassionate adults.
Obviously the man in the story was not interested in educating the writer about this issue of abortion. It was pure self-defensive BS. Every time I'm at a rodeo, circus, chuckwagon protest, etc... I hear the "what do you do for humans" comment thrown at me countless times, and everyone thinks he/she is the first to utter those words.
Maybe meat makes you unoriginal, hehe.

I know! I get that so much too! It annoys me because I'm also a human rights activist too, and alot of time I hear "what about all those Iraqi children being killed!?". That's one of the reasons I'm an anti-war activist! Like just because I care about nonhumans I suddenly can't care about humans. There IS enough room in the human heart to care about everyone, but so many people are too filled with ignorance to realize that.
