New Mexico Bans Cockfighting, Leaving Louisiana as the Last State That Allows the Barbaric Blood Sport On March 12, 2007, New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson signed into law Senate Bill 10, making the state the 49th in the U.S. to criminalize cockfighting.
Under the new law—which goes into effect on July 1, 2007—those caught participating in cockfighting will face misdemeanor charges for their first and second offenses as well as felony charges following further arrests.
The victory for birds—and New Mexico’s citizens, given the startling frequency with which drugs, firearms, and other violent crimes accompany cockfighting events—was in large part a result of the efforts of Sen. Mary Jane Garcia, who sponsored the legislation.
